Good quality data is essential for monitoring and tracking energy and resource consumption. From a single site to large property portfolios, data is aggregated and collected from a variety of sources, including utilities, sub-meters, manual readings and internal systems. With advances in technology it is becoming easier to collect data, but the reliability and completeness of this information is often hidden unless advanced analysis is carried out on a frequent basis.
At EnergyDeck, we’re typically much better at working on platform improvements than we are at talking about them. We update the EnergyDeck system on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with a constant stream of improvements. In recent weeks we’ve also implemented a number of larger feature updates that we want to share at this point.
Managing energy can be complicated and confusing to the untrained eye. The EnergyDeck platform already provides a simple and powerful user interface to track and manage buildings. However we thought it was time that this interface was pocket sized. The perfect solution? The new EnergyDeck app.
At EnergyDeck we’re busy building features that enable users to get to grips with how effective their energy efficiency audits really are. The latest piece of this puzzle was launched last week - users now have the capability to add projects to audit records, which in turn drops them automatically into your projects portfolio.
At EnergyDeck we believe that for our users to successfully run their buildings better the essential first step is having confidence in their data. So to support this confidence, enabling better analysis and decision making, we’ve recently launched a brand new feature: Data Quality.
We’ve previously looked at how we will be supporting our users’ access to high quality data by simplifying data acquisition through out of the box integration with hardware and other data providers. Since then, we’ve been hard at work extending this capability and have now over a dozen data sources available, with many more already in the pipeline.
You may have noticed over the past few weeks that the way sites are presented on EnergyDeck has changed considerably.
For one thing, you can now get up and running much faster with our simpler site creation forms, while at the same time we’ve added tabs to give you the option to capture much more additional information about your building and how you use it.
As well as these two changes, there was an even more fundamental update relating to how buildings are conceptualised on EnergyDeck.
From the beginning, we have provided users with the ability to create sites and subsites. This meant you could create a building and then model individual areas inside that building, for example floors. However, if you wanted to go further and divide the areas into smaller areas, for example divide the floors into individual rooms, you couldn’t.
But that was then, and this is now: we’ve lifted this limitation meaning you can now divide and subdivide a building to your heart’s content!

If you are an EnergyDeck customer, you will have recently received an email to tell you that we have migrated your account to a new plan. This is because we have simplified our account structure to align better with our customers’ needs, which in turn will allow us to develop more specific account functionality to provide everyone a better EnergyDeck experience.
So what have we done and what’s in it for you?
EnergyDeck just introduced a new facility to the platform to help you keep on top of your consumption. You can now setup alerts on any meter so that you get notified when the consumption linked to that meter is outside of pre-defined limits. For example, if you have a building that typically consumes roughly 1000kWh of electricity every month, you can set up a few monthly alerts:
An upper limit at 1000kWh so that you are notified when the consumption goes above the average for any given month;
A lower limit at 800kWh so that you are notified when the consumption has been significantly below average for any given month;
An upper limit at 500kWh so that you get a notification when it goes past the half way point: if that point is reached after the 15th day of the month, you should be within limits for the remainder of that month; if it is reached before the 15th day of the month, you still have time to investigate and address over-consumption so that the month’s consumption falls within expected limits.
As we have nearly 1000 registered users on EnergyDeck, I thought I would share a very useful piece of insight into the use a cool feature that has been live on the platform for a few months now. This particular feature is an extension to our contract and tariff support and is all about making it easier for you to track costs that result from energy use.
Our initial contract and tariff implementation allowed you to group tariffs within contracts and assign a single charge to each tariff. Of course, this is not quite the way real life works. Most tariffs have more than one charge, there is a mix of consumption linked charges, standing charges and percentage based charges like VAT. So we added that in.
The latest update to EnergyDeck is primarilly about data, making it easier to feed raw meter readings into the system at one end and extracting useful high level information at the other end with minimal effort in between.
The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that a brand new sub-menu appears under the Setup menu in EnergyDeck:
This new Contracts menu allows you to manage your energy supplier contracts and their associated tariffs. You can setup what contracts you have with what suppliers, specify details of the various tariffs under those contracts and link individual meters to each tariff. If a tariff changes, all meters linked to that tariff will automatically see the change and costs will be updated accordingly.
