We are delighted to announce that SPIMA recently signed a reseller agreement with EnergyDeck to provide its customers with an affordable and scalable energy management solution. SPIMA was formed in 1990 to serve the needs of the materials handling sector in Cyprus, especially in the areas of warehouse storage systems. The company's activities include a full range of supplies and services for the logistics industry. The latest announcement will see Spima entering the energy market through innovative products, as well as the offering of Energy Management through EnergyDeck.

If you read the technology press, you will have seen a flurry of articles about the Heartbleed Bug this week. This bug is a serious vulnerability in OpenSSL, a software library used by a large number of web sites to deliver their services over encrypted connections, including EnergyDeck.
The security advisory about this vulnerability was first sent out on Monday night and we received it on Tuesday morning. We immediately took steps to verify whether the EnergyDeck site was impacted, discovered that it was and patched the system. This was done through an emergency fix by midday Tuesday.
Revising our security configuration and procedures is a normal process at EnergyDeck and we do it regularly to ensure that every issue is dealt with as quickly as possible. In this particular case, we are indebted to the open source community and in particular the Debian project for releasing a patch very quickly after the initial vulnerability was disclosed.

It's been a busy time at EnergyDeck as we start adding more customers and features to our platform. We are constantly monitoring what is happening in the technology and energy/clean tech sectors so our platform is meeting and getting ahead of our customers requirements. One of trends that we are constantly monitoring is the impact of IoT on energy efficiency. One of the biggest challenges in driving energy efficiency at home and in the commercial space is the availability of energy data. Smart meters add huge value in increasing the frequency, accuracy and availability of consumption data but their take up is still slow. Smart meters for commercial use can still cost several hundred pounds and the fact that meter operators practically own the data (charging collection and management fees for every single meter feed) further compounds the “legacy” aspect of today’s energy management industry.

EnergyDeck just introduced a new facility to the platform to help you keep on top of your consumption. You can now setup alerts on any meter so that you get notified when the consumption linked to that meter is outside of pre-defined limits. For example, if you have a building that typically consumes roughly 1000kWh of electricity every month, you can set up a few monthly alerts:
An upper limit at 1000kWh so that you are notified when the consumption goes above the average for any given month;
A lower limit at 800kWh so that you are notified when the consumption has been significantly below average for any given month;
An upper limit at 500kWh so that you get a notification when it goes past the half way point: if that point is reached after the 15th day of the month, you should be within limits for the remainder of that month; if it is reached before the 15th day of the month, you still have time to investigate and address over-consumption so that the month’s consumption falls within expected limits.

The Internet was in a bit of a frenzy last night as Google announced that they acquired Nest for a cool $3.2 billion. Everybody from technology web sites like TechCrunch or The Register to general media like the BBC and The Guardian had something to say about it and analysis to offer. The original press release doesn’t say much so everything beyond this is speculation.At EnergyDeck, we have a team composed of former employees of Google and Opower among others, working on an innovative web-based solution for energy management in buildings. So it goes without saying that we’re rather excited about the news. However, I’d like to take a step back and look at the acquisition and potential implications for users from a pure data and technology standpoint.

As we have nearly 1000 registered users on EnergyDeck, I thought I would share a very useful piece of insight into the use a cool feature that has been live on the platform for a few months now. This particular feature is an extension to our contract and tariff support and is all about making it easier for you to track costs that result from energy use.
Our initial contract and tariff implementation allowed you to group tariffs within contracts and assign a single charge to each tariff. Of course, this is not quite the way real life works. Most tariffs have more than one charge, there is a mix of consumption linked charges, standing charges and percentage based charges like VAT. So we added that in.

Launched in May 2009 by Forum for the Future, the West of England Carbon Challenge (WECC) brought public and private organisations from across Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire together in a collective commitment to reduce their carbon emissions by 2.5% year-on-year, targeting a total reduction of 10% by 2012/13.In this time the network has grown from 10 founders to over 130 members, including the likes of BBC, Environment Agency, Triodos Bank, Yeo Valley and Wessex Water. While WECC fell a bit short of the overall group target, there have been notable successes with over 50% of members showing reductions in emissions and several showing drops of over 20%.

EnergyDeck recently launched a YouTube channel so we can begin creating videos to help spread the word about EnergyDeck, show how it can be best used, and introduce the team behind it. The first video posted is already up, and does just this - providing a brief overview of EnergyDeck as a whole and the team (without Markus, unfortunately, who was on holiday at the time). It was created as part of our semi-final entry for the Cisco BIG Awards competition, and so is a great general introduction to the platform (plus we were required to stick to a time limit, so it’s not too long…)

August has seen the arrival of Nicholas Mason, who joins the EnergyDeck team as Director of Business Development. Nic joins us from CBRE’s Energy & Sustainability Team where he was a senior E&S consultant providing carbon reporting and energy management services to companies such as Sainsbury’s, Nomura, C&A Europe and CBRE Global Investors. Prior to CBRE, Nic worked at Westminster City Council as their carbon, energy and sustainable procurement manager.
