Data-driven insights from Internet of Things (IoT) devices are enabling energy and sustainability experts to make better-informed decisions like never before. Energy use within buildings is inherently variable, and until recently, even the brightest minds were in the dark when it came to explaining fluctuations in usage, due to the long list of factors that can cause a building’s energy usage to change seemingly at random. Having a fundamental understanding of how a building uses energy and what causes it to change is essential to optimising performance in the long term.

This is a continuation of a previous blog featuring a critical look on current developments in the proptech industry, sparked by a recent visit to the Future: PropTech event. If I was ever going to shoot a futuristic movie, it would probably be called something along the lines of “Rise of the Platforms” (there goes any hope I may have ever held out for a successful movie making career, I know). The trend in the proptech industry is definitely to try to cover an increasing number of use cases and data domains, and platforms are the traditional “delivery mode” for this.

Are you happy with how 2018 turned out?At a global stage, the world certainly experienced its fair share of challenging events, from the mundane to the outrageous (let’s not get into the gory details here, you all know what and who we mean...). Back at Fabriq, however, it’s been our best year yet, and we’re looking forward to continuing on this trajectory into 2019 and beyond!

Lots has been said about 2018 already and what an amazing and at the same time dramatic year it has been. Personally, I will never forget *that* simultaneous landing of the two Falcon Heavy side boosters (followed by watching Spaceman circle the planet live on YT for a few hours). While in a decade or two we might actually send people to Mars, there is something much bigger unfolding right in front of our eyes, right here and now.

Apologies for the title. Yes, it helped to grab your attention. And no, we didn’t support the guy during the election and definitely no – we will not “just get along” now that he’s made it to the top. Instead we will fight harder than ever before to protect the planet and reduce our consumption of natural resources and toxic emissions. It might even make the RoW (rest of world = everyone outside of the rust belt) more united in fighting the good fight.

Whatever else March is, it certainly can’t be accused of being uneventful for UK start-ups. Last week’s budget proved promising for the community, highlighting the government’s intention to provide further investment and support to drive growth for small businesses around the country.

We’ve previously looked at how we will be supporting our users’ access to high quality data by simplifying data acquisition through out of the box integration with hardware and other data providers. Since then, we’ve been hard at work extending this capability and have now over a dozen data sources available, with many more already in the pipeline.

It's been a busy time at EnergyDeck as we start adding more customers and features to our platform. We are constantly monitoring what is happening in the technology and energy/clean tech sectors so our platform is meeting and getting ahead of our customers requirements. One of trends that we are constantly monitoring is the impact of IoT on energy efficiency. One of the biggest challenges in driving energy efficiency at home and in the commercial space is the availability of energy data. Smart meters add huge value in increasing the frequency, accuracy and availability of consumption data but their take up is still slow. Smart meters for commercial use can still cost several hundred pounds and the fact that meter operators practically own the data (charging collection and management fees for every single meter feed) further compounds the “legacy” aspect of today’s energy management industry.
